Might I or someone close to me be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder?
Seeking help after a traumatic event
In your life, have you (or a loved one) ever had any experience that was so frightening, horrible or upsetting that, in the past month, you:
- Have had nightmares about it or thought about it when you did not want to?
- Tried hard not to think about it or went out of your way to avoid situations that reminded you of it?
- Were constantly on guard, watchful, or easily startled?
- Felt numb or detached from others, activities, or your surroundings?
If you have experienced an extreme event, such as a serious car accident, assault or abuse, felt intense fear, horror or helplessness at the time and answered ´yes´ to at least three of the above questions you could be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). But PTSD isn't the only possible response to extreme trauma you may have for example developed a phobia, depression or panic disorder. It is also possible to suffer from PTSD as well other disorders. To get a complete picture you would need to check out your questionnaire results in Moving On After Trauma and preferably also with a qualified mental health professional.
